GIRO AEON RRP $399
Imagine a helmet that gives you an advantage every time the road climbs or the heat turns up. Until now, you couldn’t get the benefits of lighter weight and better ventilation in a single helmet. But the new Aeon weighs only 222g in a CPSC approved size Medium. Yet it also provides cooling power equivalent to the most ventilated helmet ever made, the Ionos™. Plus it offers the luxurious feel of Roc Loc® 5, and an innovative thermoformed Roll Cage reinforcement. If you’re looking for the best balance of weight, ventilation and comfort, this is the new standard.

GIRO SELECTOR AERO HELMET RRP $449
As you might expect, Giro has used wind tunnel data to sculpt the new helmet to make it slicker and faster than the Advantage. And for most riders, a sleek helmet will do as much or more for lessening the overall drag coefficient as any other static change you could make to your bike or personal gear. The Selector has two significant upgrades that not only make it your best choice for aerodynamics, but that necessitated changes to help make it more comfortable as well. The first thing you'll notice is that it's the first Giro helmet with an eyeshield. Its strict purpose is to further enhance the aero properties of the helmet by smoothing the leading surface. Another tangible benefit you'll realize is a quieter experience as you ride. If nothing else, we've found that this perception of less wind noise acts as a placebo -- less noise, less resistance, more speed, etc. It's removable if you prefer to wear sunglasses, however. The lens also has two vents, located on either side of the centerline at the top edge. They minimize the chance for fogging on humid days, and they duct a sizeable volume of cooling air to flow over the head and out the twin exhaust ports in the tail of the helmet. The back of the helmet is where you'll find the other big changes. Where the Advantage had a tail that was open on the underside, the Selector Helmet is closed, akin to a belly pan on an F1 car. The helmet comes with two versions of the lower cover, one that extends down 10mm and another that extends 45mm. This design promotes smoother airflow around the helmet and gives you the opportunity to tailor the fit between the tail of the helmet and your back. The selection between the two choices would depend on your position on the bike and how low your arms and shoulders are, relative to your hips. For reference, Leipheimer used the 10mm cover as did stage winner Fabian Cancellara (though his Selector wore a Bell label on the brow to appease team sponsors).

UVEX FP1 RRP $399
The FP1 was designed to be the ultimate road race helmet, with direct input from the T-Mobile team, light weight and minimalist design prevail. It's succes meant that from 2006 Uvex also supported the Francaise Des Jeux team. The 50-55cm helmet is a true sub 200 gram helmet WITH ALL FITTINGS. Some manufacturers quote weight without straps and buckles!

GIRO ADVANTAGE 2 AERO HELMET RRP $259
The Giro Advantage 2 Aero Helmet is the same helmet that the Astana and Radio Shack ProTour teams used in the Tour de France. It's built with all the technical nous Giro brings to standard helmets like the Ionos and the Prolight. They were beaten to the aero helmet market by many other companies, but the folks who waited for the Advantage were duly rewarded with Giro's typical attention to fit, light weight, ventilation, and comfort. Drag coefficients for a sleek time trial bikes and fast wheels are minimal these days, so the greatest gains to be had can be found by optimizing your position on the bike and making yourself more aero. And the easiest way to do this is by using a helmet like this Giro Advantage. The wind tunnel data varies, but there's no hiding the fact that the switch to an aero helmet will save you more than a handful of seconds in time trials of significant length. The Advantage uses Giro's latest retention system, Roc Loc 5. The advantage over the older Roc Loc 4 is that you can make micro adjustments to the retention basket with a thumb and finger -- simply twist the ratcheting dial to achieve perfection. The whole system can be adjusted up and down to cradle the back of your head just as you like. Some of Giro's forward thinking gave rise to the special shape of the arms -- they allow the use of Giro's eyewear without interference, and they maintain the position of your straps so getting the helmet on is a no-muss, no-fuss affair. The Giro Advantage 2 Aero Helmet is available in Red/black and White/silver and comes in 3 sizes -- Small (51-55cm), Medium (55-59cm), and Large (>59cm). If you were worried that wearing an aero helmet might be stifling or obnoxious in a hot summertime TT, you can dismiss your fears. The 5 vents and internal air channels are enough to keep you comfortable.
